OSU Wireless-Network: Setup for Mac OS X (10.5)



The following instructions pertain to Mac OS X 10.5 only. For instructions on connecting in older versions of OS X, see OSU Wireless-Network: Setup for Mac OS X (10.3 and 10.4).

NOTE: If you have not already done so, create an OSUWireless Username and Password at the OIT Account Management site.

To configure Mac OS X 10.5 for OSU Wireless:

  1. Go to the Apple Menu, and select System Preferences
  2. Click the Network system preference icon in the third row
  3. If necessary, click the lock icon in the lower left to make changes.
  4. Click AirPort on the left, and click Advanced... at the bottom right
    • Click the 802.1X tab
    • NOTE: If you are running Mac OS X 10.5.2 or earlier, see below:

    • (10.5.2 and earlier) From the "Domain:" drop down menu, select User
      If the "Domain:" pulldown menu is greyed out, click Disable 802.1X Login
    • (10.5.2 and earlier) Click on the + (plus) button in the lower left-hand corner, and type a name for the new configuration (E.g., OSU Wireless)
    • Pre 10.5.3 - Enter the wireless configuration information.

      NOTE: If you are running Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later, see below:

    • (10.5.3 and later) Click on the + (plus) button in the lower left-hand corner, select Add User Profile and type a name for the new configuration (E.g., OSU Wireless)
    • 10.5.3 - Enter the wireless configuration information.

    • On the right, enter the following information:
      • User Name: enter your osuwireless username
      • Password: enter your osuwireless password
      • Wireless Network: osuwireless
      • Authentication: Ensure that PEAP is the only option checked
        (optionally drag it to the top of the list)
    • Click OK
  5. Click Apply
You are now finished! When in an area with osuwireless coverage, select "osuwireless" from the AirPort menu to connect.

If you would like for your Macintosh to automatically connect to "osuwireless" when it is in range, follow these instructions:

  1. While in the "Network" system preference, click AirPort on the left, and click Advanced... at the bottom right
  2. Click the AirPort tab
  3. Click on the + (plus) button
  4. Enter in the following information:
    • Network Name: osuwireless
    • Security: WPA Enterprise
    • User Name: not necessary, as it is saved in the 802.1X configuration
    • Password: not necessary, as it is saved in the 802.1X configuration
    • 802.1X: select the name of the 802.1X configuration you created
    • Ensure the "Remember this network" checkbox is checked
    • Click Add
    • Enter the wireless configuration information.

      If you have other networks in your preferred networks list, you can drag osuwirelessto the top if you would it to be the first network to which your Macintosh connects.

  5. Click OK
  6. Click Apply
