Time Warner's SMTP no longer allows third party emails (including @osu.edu addresses)
Time Warner, in response to large amounts of spam from third party email addresses being sent through their servers, now only allows Time Warner email accounts to send through their SMTP server. The Time Warner SMTP servers will check the return address on all messages handed to it, and reject those messages which do not claim a Time Warner return email address with the error:
Your message was not delivered because the return address was refused
This means that anyone with an OSU email address and a Time-Warner Roadrunner account trying to set up his or her email client at home will very likely not be able to do so any longer.
Possible Workarounds:
- Use the OSUNet VPN service - establish VPN connection (see instructions), then use smtp.service.ohio-state.edu as the outgoing mail (SMTP) server.
- Forward your OSU email to Time Warner email address, and check all mail there. To forward your OSU email, visit this web page.
- Read (or at least send) OSU email via OSU Webmail.
- Use another ISP which does not so restrict outbound mail.
