OSU Webmail: Deleted Messages Still Count Against Quota

Some users of the new OSU Webmail system are experiencing a problem where deleted messages still count against their quota, even though the messages have been removed from the mailbox.

The cause of this problem seems to be related to a mail setting which marks messages deleted instead of moving them to the trash. With this setting, you need to manually "Expunge" the deleted messages.

If you are deleting messages from OSU Webmail, but they still seem to be impacting your quota or showing in the Manage Folders view, please do the following:

  • Log into OSU Webmail.
  • Navigate to the folder where the size does not reflect the actual amount of messages.
  • From the View menu, select Deleted.
  • This should show the messages that have been marked as deleted, but never removed.
  • Click the Select All button.
  • From the Actions menu, select Expunge.
  • Click OK to permanently remove the deleted messages.
  • Repeat for any other folders with this problem.
NOTE: There is an option in OSU Webmail to change the deletion behavior to move messages to the trash rather than mark them as deleted, which should prevent you from needing to manually expunge the messages. HOWEVER, there seems to be a bug that prevents any changes to this setting from taking effect. System administrators are currently working with the vendor to resolve this.
