Mailing List Error: User unknown in local recipient table
Occasionally, a message sent to a Listproc (listname@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu) mailing list may bounce back with the following error:
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<listname@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu>
(reason: 550 <listname@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu>: User unknown in local recipient table)
This error indicates a problem with the way the list's address is registered on the server. It's most often encountered on newly created lists. If you are a list owner and receive this error, please contact the IT Service Desk (8help) at 614-688-HELP (4357), or by e-mail at 8help@osu.edu to report the problem, and a mailing list system administrator will correct the problem as quickly as possible.
NOTE: The "User unknown in local recipient table", if NOT directly following the list address, can also indicate a subscriber accidentally added to the list with the domain (portion of the e-mail address after the @ symbol) missing, such as:
check_mta_response(): Address: RCPT To: <smith.9999>
not recognized says the MTA on localhost (port 25).
550 <smith.9999>: User unknown in local recipient table
If you receive THIS version of the error, simply unsubscribe the incomplete address and re-add that subscriber with their full e-mail address.
