BuckeyeLink(SIS): Financial Aid
Online Self-Service opens for Student Financial Aid
Information about SFA Self-Service:
- As a result of the SIS software implementation, for the first time beginning February 25th, students will be able to view their financial aid information online for the 2009-2010 aid year, including applications received by the Financial Aid Office and “To-Do” lists assigned to the student.
- The “To-Do” list details documentation the student needs to provide and will be updated as the Financial Aid Office receives the information.
- When to look for To-Do's: The Office of Student Financial Aid will send an e-mail to students directing them to Self-Service when documents have been posted. Incoming freshman and Graduate and Professional students will be able to view their “To-Do's” beginning February 25th and currently enrolled undergraduate students will be able to view their “To-Do” lists beginning mid or late March. A direct e-mail will be sent to currently enrolled students when their “To-Do's” are available for viewing online. Parents of dependent students will be sent a letter via U.S. mail listing the documents required and directs them to the SFA website to access the forms.
- It is important that students review and submit the required information by the stated deadline for all documents on their To-Do lists. Complete instructions will be included for each To-Do list item.
- IMPORTANT - System Downtime, 4/11 to 4/13: Self-Service will not be available during the weekend of April 11 and 12 due to a major SIS conversion of Student Records data. Students who need to provide verification materials or newly admitted students who need to accept Financial Aid awards will not be able to access the system during this time.
- During the week of May 18, currently enrolled students will receive an e-mail directing them to Self-Service to review their Financial Aid Award package. Details regarding how to accept their awards and forms that need to be completed will be included in their To-Do lists.
- Due to economy, the Office of Student Financial Aid is receiving a higher volume of financial aid applications for the next academic year. The application deadline for currently enrolled students and students applying to an extended campus who are experiencing economic hardships and are in need of funding is March 1st. Visit the Student Financial Aid web site for more information - sfa.osu.edu
- Student Financial Aid Status can be accessed at buckeyelink.osu.edu in the Financials section by clicking the Student or Future Students Tabs.
- Need help navigating through the new online Student Financial Aid pages? A convenient online Student reference guide is available at https://assist-erp.osu.edu/sis/WebHelp/financial_aid/ (URL is case-sensitive) to provide an overview of self-service features.
When students click on the “Financial Aid Status” link, a drop down will appear prompting the student to make an Aid Year selection.
Background Information about the Student Information System (SIS):
The Student Information System (SIS) Project is part of the university's initiative to connect areas of academic excellence, and to provide a system that can meet the needs of the student population for many years to come. The project's mission is to establish a single, cohesive authoritative data source for student-related data, thus providing consistent information sharing among faculty, administrative and student users.
As of March 1, four of the five major SIS implementations were completed. Phase five will be implemented on June 15th, the day after spring commencement, culminating with the first commencement from the SIS in August, 2009. Some of the new features of SIS include:
- The SIS is a web-based system that can be accessed from any web browser on campus or off campus. Most of our current (legacy) data systems (MARX, BARS, ARCS, and PRODCICS) are housed in separate databases on the mainframe, and, while mainframe systems respond a bit faster than web-based systems, they do not offer the flexibility needed to meet the changing needs of the university.
- In addition to integrating the current student systems, the SIS is also integrated with the existing Human Resources system. This allows information about all people associated with the university, regardless of whether they are students or employees, to reside in a single system. It also streamlines processes that require information about people who are both students and employees, such as Federal Work Study.
- The SIS does not depend on SSNs to identify people. Rather a system-generated OSU ID is the primary identifier for both students and employees.
