Configuring Outlook Express To Check Buckeye Mail

NOTE: You must access Buckeye Mail at least once on the web to complete the account setup before you can use a client.

To configure Outlook Express to check Buckeye Mail:

  1. Startup Outlook Express. Click on the Tools menu, and then choose Accounts.

  2. Click on the Mail Tab, click the Add button, then choose Mail, which launches the Internet Connection Wizard.

  3. For "Display Name," enter your real name. Click Next.

  4. For "Email Address," enter your Buckeye Mail e-mail address (lastname.#@buckeyemail.osu.edu), then click Next.

  5. Under "E-mail Server Names," "My incoming mail server is a..." select POP3 or IMAP (What's the difference?). You might want to use IMAP because it supports more features.

  6. For "Incoming Mail (POP3 or IMAP) server," type outlook.com and for "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server," type pod51000.outlook.com and then click Next.

  7. In the next window, under "Account Name" enter your Buckeye Mail address (lastname.#@buckeyemail.osu.edu). The username may be just your username; you may need to re-enter the @buckeyemail.osu.edu part. You can enter your password next to "Password" if you want Outlook Express to save your password so you do not have to enter it every time you check your mail. Click Next.

  8. Click Finish.

  9. Double click the new account that shows up as outlook.com

  10. In the text field under "Mail Account," change "outlook.com" to something more familiar, such as "My Buckeye Mail".

  11. Click on the Servers tab on top of the window.

  12. On the "Outgoing Server" tab, check "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication". Then click Settings next to this checkbox. Make sure "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected. Click OK to leave this window.

  13. Click the Advanced tab on top.

  14. There are two checkboxes that both say "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". One is under "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" One is under "Incoming Mail (POP)" or "Incoming Mail (IMAP)". Click both of these check boxes. The number next to "Incoming mail" should change to 995 (for POP) or 993 (for IMAP).

  15. Click Apply at the bottom. Then click OK.

  16. Close the Internet Accounts window.

  17. To check your Buckeye Mail, just click on the Send/Receive button in the toolbar.
