New Restrictions for Sending E-mail via OSU Mail

Dear Ohio State Student,

As you know, during April Ohio State launched a new student e-mail system called Buckeye Mail. At that time students were required to select Buckeye Mail or another commercial account (Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, Excite, Hotmail, Road Runner, etc.) for all e-mail services.

The university made a commitment to you that any un-forwarded e-mail will stay in the current central e-mail system until you forward it elsewhere (to Buckeye Mail or another mail service) or December 31, 2009, whichever occurred first.

In recent months, Ohio State has faced e-mail blockages from service providers and other abuse of the system due to SPAM and phishing attacks. Many of these spammers are using the old central system student mailboxes to launch their attacks.

To combat this security risk, beginning August 28 Ohio State will place a "hold" on all send functions from these old central system student mailboxes. This "hold" will not stop you from composing and sending a message, but it will go undelivered. This "hold" change will dramatically reduce SPAM and phishing attacks coming from those old central system student mailboxes.

This change will not affect your ability to view e-mail stored in these old central system student mailboxes, and will not affect your Buckeye Mail or other commercial account.

If you have not moved or forwarded your e-mail from the central system and wish to do so, please follow the detailed instructions on how to move it to you new Buckeye Mail account (8help.osu.edu/4024.html) or another mail service provider (8help.osu.edu/3172.html). You should migrate any mail you wish to keep to your new account before December 31. On that date, all student accounts will be eliminated and any e-mail remaining in them will be deleted.

Additional details regarding Buckeye Mail are available at 8help.osu.edu/buckeyemail, by e-mailing 8help@osu.edu, or by calling 614-688-HELP (4357).
