Student conversion from Webmail to BuckeyeMail
Quick Summary The ability for students to send e-mail using Webmail is now being disabled for those who forward their mail to Buckeye Mail or other commercial accounts.
Student action needed:
- For those who have already activated their Buckeye Mail, or are already forwarding your e-mail, you must use Buckeye Mail or other commercial account to send your e-mail, not Webmail.
- For those students who have not activated Buckeye Mail and wish to convert to the new Buckeye Mail they should activate their account "See Example 1 below".
- The final option is to forward e-mail to commercial mail service of the student's choice "see Example 2 below".
----------------------------------
Starting in April 2009 Ohio State launched a new student e-mail system called Buckeye Mail. At that time students were required to select Buckeye Mail or forward their OSU mail to another commercial account such as (Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, Excite, Hotmail, Road Runner, etc.) for all e-mail services.
On August 28 Ohio State began "turning off" the ability to send mail from the central Webmail system for students only. In order to send, forward or reply to an e-mail students must activate their Buckeye Mail account or activate forwarding to a commercial system as previously mentioned. If a student attempts to send mail from OSU's 'Webmail' they may receive the error message '553 - Your account is not allowed to send or forward e-mail'. However, the student's Webmail account will continue to receive e-mail until the Buckeye Mail account is activated or mail is forwarded to another carrier.
This change will not affect a student's ability to view e-mail stored on the central Webmail system, Buckeye Mail or other commercial account. If a student activates a Buckeye Mail account, mail will stop being sent to Webmail and automatically be forwarded to Buckeye Mail. Students will have until December 31, 2009 to forward any mail on the central system to their new e-mail account.
It is not mandatory to use Buckeye Mail. Students may forward their mail to any commercial account of their choosing. When a mail forwarding address is chosen mail will start being sent to that address. However, mail already stored on the central system will still need to be moved if the student wants to keep it.
To move old mail from the central system to Buckeye Mail, please follow the detailed instructions at ( 8help.osu.edu/4024.html ). Students should check and move any mail they wish to keep by December 31, 2009. On that date, all central system student accounts will be eliminated and any e-mail remaining in them will be deleted.
