How can I set my mailing list so that anyone / only subscribers / only owners can send to it?

Who can send to a list is an option which list owners have at the time of list creation. When a list is created, a list owner can set their list so that anyone can send messages to the list, or so that only subscribers can send messages to the list.

It's possible for list owners to change this setting after a list has been created. The easiest way to make this change is using the List Owner's Management page. It's also possible to make the change using e-mail commands to the listprocessor. The command should be e-mailed to:

listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu

The message should have no subject, and in the body of the message include one of the following bolded commands:

conf listname listpassword send-by-all
--in order to set the list so that anyone can send messages through.

conf listname listpassword send-by-subscribers
--in order to set the list so that only subscribers can send messages through.

conf listname listpassword send-by-owners
--in order to set the list so that only owners can send messages through.

In all of these cases, listname and listpassword should be replaced with the correct information for your list.

Note: In the cases of send-by-subscribers and send-by-owners, this is controlled by the 'From' address - the listproc compares the From address of a message to its subscriber file or owner file respectively - messages sent to the list have to come from the address as it appears in the subscriber file or the message will be rejected.
