Playing .ASF files on a Macintosh

In order to play .ASF files on a Macintosh, it is necessary to download Flip4Mac from the Flip4Mac website. Flip4Mac is the solution which Microsoft recommends for playing files which were formerly playable by Windows Media Player. Microsoft stopped distributing Windows Media Player for the Macintosh in January 2006..

The Flip4Mac installer installs a Quicktime plugin which allows Quicktime to play a variety of Windows-formatted files. It will not allow DRM-protected Windows media files to be played.

A third-party solution is VLC, which can be found on Versiontracker. It plays a wide variety of video formats, including VCDs and DVDs.

Another solution is MPlayer, which plays a wide variety of formats and is also available from Versiontracker. It's still under development and has some rough edges, so at this point VLC is a better choice.
