Internet Connection Options
Members of the campus community in residence halls, offices and labs at The Ohio State University have access to direct, high-speed Internet connections. Those at home have a number of connection choices.
Ohio State Options
- Ohio State's campus network serves students, faculty and staff on campus through direct, high-speed connections in campus offices, Student Computer Centers, departmental computing labs, and residence halls.
- OSU Wireless-Network is a wireless network available from many buildings and student gathering areas on campus. For instructions on activating an account, configuring devices to connect, and finding coverage areas, see the OSU Wireless - OSU Students page or OSU Wireless - OSU Faculty & Staff page.
- ResNet service offers a direct, high-speed, wired connection for each student in every campus residence hall room. Service requires installation of an ethernet card in each connected computer. The Department of Housing, Food Services and Events Centers supports ResNet. Send e-mail to resnet@osu.edu, or call 292-5700.
- OSUWeb.net is a fee-based service offered by UNITS that provides off-campus, dial-in modem access. OSU faculty, staff, and students can choose from one of three low-priced access plans. The standard plan is $6.95 per month for up to 100 hours of connectivity ($.10 per additional hour), five megabytes of personal Web space, and more than 97-percent first-time dialup connectivity. Customers also retain the osu.edu (OIT) e-mail service.
- HomeNet is an OIT baseline service that provides off-campus, dial-in modem access for faculty, staff, and students. Dial 722-9800 for a 30-minute connection or 722-9900 for a 6-hour connection (fewer lines available).
Commercial Options
Commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer these alternatives to Ohio State services for off-campus access to the Internet. Information about local Internet Service Providers can be found by searching the Web, or in the phone book.
- Modem services usually charge a monthly fee for dialup connections, and costs vary. In addition, you may incur additional charges if you exceed the number of hours you can be online. Most do provide reliable first-time connectivity at 56K, free e-mail, and personal Web space. Some ISPs offer toll-free numbers to connect to the Internet from outside the service area; however, many charge more for this service or may limit the coverage area.
- DSL technology provided by local phone companies generally offers faster connection speeds then modems, but requires interface cards and special phone lines. Speeds depend on the distance between your residence and the phone company's exchange equipment.
- Cable modem service provided by local cable companies, is the fastest connection available to homes. Service requires a special cable modem and possibly a network interface card installed by the cable company.
