The following message is being sent by the Office of Information Technology to students who are still using OSU Webmail, rather than Buckeye Mail or another Internet Service Provider.

It is a legitimate message, and the actions stated in the message are required (for those who receive it) for continued access to e-mail.

From: The IT Service Desk (8help) 8help@osu.edu
Subject: Buckeye Mail Transition: Important Information About Your osu.edu E-Mail Account

Important Information About Your osu.edu E-Mail Account follows. Actions are required on your part, so please read this carefully. If you have questions, contact the IT Service Desk (see below). A copy of this message is also available on the 8help website at http://8help.osu.edu/4255.html .

- Effective immediately, e-mail sent to your name.#@osu.edu e-mail address will be delivered to name.#@buckeyemail.osu.edu.

Buckeye Mail is the e-mail system for students of The Ohio State University. It is a partnership between the university and Microsoft, using Windows Live. Buckeye Mail is a free service to students. For more information about Buckeye Mail, including links to frequently asked questions, client setup instructions, and help articles, see http://8help.osu.edu/buckeyemail .

- You will need to change the password for your OSU Internet Username before you can access your new Buckeye Mail account.

Instructions for changing your OSU Internet Username password can be found at http://8help.osu.edu/3328.html . Please allow up to one hour for your new password to propagate to your Buckeye Mail account. If you do NOT know the password for your OSU Internet Username, call the IT Service Desk (see below).

- You must access Buckeye Mail at least once on the web to complete the Buckeye Mail account setup.

Buckeye Mail web access instructions can be found at http://8help.osu.edu/4005.html . Please allow up to one hour for your new password to propagate to your Buckeye Mail account. Your Windows Live ID is your name.#@buckeyemail.osu.edu.

- Do I have to use Buckeye Mail?

No. Students need to use either Buckeye Mail or another e-mail service. Information about how to forward your e-mail to another service an be found at http://8help.osu.edu/3172.html . All e-mail sent to your name.#@osu.edu will be forwarded to the account you designate, whether that is Buckeye Mail, MSN, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Roadrunner, or any other service provider.

- E-mail stored in your osu.edu mailbox has not been moved.

The creation of your new Buckeye Mail account doesn't automatically move your old mail to that account. It will stay on the central e-mail system until you forward it elsewhere (to Buckeye Mail or another mail service). For instructions on how to move it, go to http://8help.osu.edu/4024.html . Messages must be in your OSU Webmail Inbox to be transferred. Any mail in your OSU Webmail account that you want to keep must be moved by December 31, 2009 or it will be deleted.

Special Note: During October 2009, attempts to communicate with you using your name.#@osu.edu e-mail address were unsuccessful because your osu.edu mailbox was full at that time. Effective with this notification, all e-mail sent to your name.#@osu.edu e-mail address will be delivered to name.#@buckeyemail.osu.edu unless you forward it elsewhere. However, you should assume that some e-mail sent to you previously was also returned to the sender due to a full mailbox.

No Profile / Profile Not Created Error On Sallie Mae Websites (Direct Deposit, Guardian Login)

Sallie Mae account profile has not been created yet.

If you are receiving the above error (or something similar), and are unable to log into Sallie Mae to set up direct deposit information for refunds, or guardian ePay, first confirm that you have activated your OSU Internet Username and have a campus e-mail address in PeopleSoft. You can confirm this through the Student Center, Personal Information section. Look for an "OSU Email" address listed in the bottom right of the Contact Information box - if there isn't one there, you will not be able to establish a direct deposit profile or a guardian account.

If you don't have campus e-mail address, try to activate your OSU Internet Username through our Account Management website, under "OSU Internet Username" and "Activate account". Your campus mail address should be displayed on Student Center the following day.

Note: Allow 2 business days after initial account activation for Sallie Mae's system to be updated.

If you receive an error that your account is already activated, contact the IT Service Desk at 614-688-HELP (4357), or by e-mail at 8help@osu.edu .

If you have a campus e-mail address that is at least 48 hours old and still receive a “no profile†error on the Sallie Mae site, there may be discrepancies in other data between SIS and Sallie Mae causing the login problems. In that case, please contact the Bursar's office at bursar@osu.edu - they have access to view data in both systems, and if necessary, can create a profile for you.

"No Match Was Found" error when sending message in Buckeye Mail

If you compose a message in Buckeye Mail to multiple recipients and receive a "No Match Was Found" error when sending, the problem is most likely the use of a comma to separate the e-mail addresses.

While this is a common standard for most e-mail clients, Buckeye Mail uses a semi-colon to separate multiple e-mail addresses.

Replacing the commas with semi-colons should fix the error.

Student conversion from Webmail to BuckeyeMail

Quick Summary
The ability for students to send e-mail using Webmail is now being disabled for those who forward their mail to Buckeye Mail or other commercial accounts.

Student action needed:

For those who have already activated their Buckeye Mail, or are already forwarding your e-mail, you must use Buckeye Mail or other commercial account to send your e-mail, not Webmail.

For those students who have not activated Buckeye Mail and wish to convert to the new Buckeye Mail they should activate their account "See Example 1 below".

The final option is to forward e-mail to commercial mail service of the student's choice "see Example 2 below".

Students can continue to "view" old messages using Webmail until Dec. 31, 2009. See instructions below for moving e-mail from Webmail to BuckeyeMail if desired.

----------------------------------

Starting in April 2009 Ohio State launched a new student e-mail system called Buckeye Mail. At that time students were required to select Buckeye Mail or forward their OSU mail to another commercial account such as (Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, Excite, Hotmail, Road Runner, etc.) for all e-mail services.

On August 28 Ohio State began "turning off" the ability to send mail from the
central Webmail system for students only. In order to send,
forward or reply to an e-mail students must activate their Buckeye Mail account
or activate forwarding to a commercial system as previously mentioned. If a student attempts to send mail from
OSU's 'Webmail' they may receive the error message '553 - Your account is not
allowed to send or forward e-mail'. However, the student's Webmail account
will continue to receive e-mail until the Buckeye Mail account is activated or
mail is forwarded to another carrier.

This change will not affect a student's ability to view e-mail stored on the
central Webmail system, Buckeye Mail or other commercial account. If a student
activates a Buckeye Mail account, mail will stop being sent to Webmail and
automatically be forwarded to Buckeye Mail. Students will have until
December 31, 2009 to forward any mail on the central system to their new e-mail
account.

It is not mandatory to use Buckeye Mail. Students may forward their mail to any
commercial account of their choosing. When a mail forwarding address is chosen mail will start being sent to that address.
However, mail already stored on the central system will still need to be moved
if the student wants to keep it.

To move old mail from the central system to Buckeye Mail, please follow the
detailed instructions at (
8help.osu.edu/4024.html
). Students should check and move any mail they wish to keep by December 31,
2009. On that date, all central system student accounts will be eliminated
and any e-mail remaining in them will be deleted.

Example 1:
Student wishes to start using Buckeye Mail for use as their mail system.

Activate Buckeye Mail system. Use web browser to go to
https://acctmgt.service.ohio-state.edu/
and click on OSU.edu E-mail tab.

Fill in the OSU Internet Username and password field then click on
Activate Buckeye Mail tab to convert from Webmail to
Buckeye Mail. Note: Unless the "Delivery Option" box is unchecked all mail sent to lastname.#@osu.edu will be forwarded to Buckeye Mail.

Click on Activate Buckeye Mail button and follow instructions to complete the process. It will take about an hour before you can start using the Buckeye Mail system at web address
buckeyemail.osu.edu.

Example 2:
Student wishes to use an e-mail system other than Buckeye Mail
for their e-mail.

Use web browser to go to
https://acctmgt.service.ohio-state.edu/
and click on OSU.edu E-mail tab.

Click on Change Delivery tab.

Fill in the OSU Internet Username and password field then click on the third button "Forward my new mail to my departmental or non-OSU
address."

Click on the "Change E-Mail" button. You will be asked for the e-mail address you wish to send all future e-mail.

Example 3:
Student wishes to transfer(import)existing e-mail messages from Webmail to Buckeye Mail.
See Instructions.

Additional details regarding Buckeye Mail are available at

Copy files to be compressed to the new folder and right click folder name and select{or send to} Compressed (zipped)

NOTE:

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.

You can also create a zipped compressed folder by right-clicking the desktop, pointing to New, and then clicking {or send to} Compressed (zipped) Folder.

You can identify compressed folders by the zipper on the folder icon.

If you share compressed folders with users on other computer systems, you may want to limit the compressed folder names to eight characters with a .zip file name extension.

Mac OS 10.6 - An Overview

On August 28, 2009 Mac OS 10.6, code name Snow Leopard, will be made available for sale. This new operating system represents an incremental improvement in the Mac OS X operating system. Key differences from earlier versions of Mac OS X include

The first version of the Mac OS for Intel-based Macintoshes. Mac OS 10.6 does not support any PPC-based Macintoshes. To determine whether or not your system is an Intel-based Macintosh select About This Mac from the Apple menu.

The type of processor in your computer will appear to the right of the Processor label in the window which appears. All Intel-based Macintoshes will run Mac OS 10.6.

Mac OS 10.6 is a 64-bit operating system. Not all Intel-based Macintoshes are 64-bit compatible; older Intel Macintoshes will run Mac OS 10.6 in 32-bit mode. For a description of what 64-bit computing means for Mac OS users take a look at Apple's new technologies website.

Grand Central Dispatch, an "under the hood" technology designed to use the multiple processors in most Intel-based Macintoshes more efficiently. For a description of what Grand Central Dispatch means for Mac OS users take a look at Apple's new technologies website.

Since Mac OS 10.6 is for Macintoshes with Intel processors all of the code for PPC processors has been taken out of the OS. The result is that Mac OS 10.6 is approximately 7 GB smaller than Mac OS 10.5. Installing Mac OS 10.6 will free up that much space on your hard drive.

OpenCL allows developers to modify their programs to use the processors built into many Macintoshes to perform general computing tasks in addition to displaying things on the computer screen. Since many new Macintoshes have graphics cards in them which have powerful processors then OpenCL allows applications to use that graphics processor as an extra "computer" and increase the speed at which things are done on the computer. For a description of what OpenCL means for Mac OS users take a look at Apple's new technologies website.

Quicktime X uses Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL to dramatically improve the quality and speed of video playback on systems running Mac OS 10.6. The Quicktime media player has been rewritten and incorporates a newer, more modern look. For a description of what Quicktime X means for Mac OS users take a look at Apple's new technologies website.

Applications that come with Mac OS 10.6, such as iCal, Mail, Safari, Address Book, etc... have been rewritten to be 64 bit applications and will run in 64-bit mode on systems capable of running in 64 bit mode. Older Intel-based Macintoshes running Mac OS 10.6 in 32 bit mode will run these applications in 32-bit mode.

Note: There are several important points to note when considering whether to upgrade to Mac OS 10.6. First, as with all Intel-based Macintoshes, it is not possible to run Classic applications on them. This should not be a problem for users who have already made the switch to an Intel-based Macintosh since those Classic applications would not have ever run on the Intel-based systems but users who are looking to buy new computers should check the applications they use often to make sure they're not running in Classic mode.

Another key change for users who are going to upgrade their system software from Mac OS 10.4.X or Mac OS 10.5.X is that Rosetta, the software package in Intel-based Macintoshes which allow them to run programs compiled to run on the older PPC-based Macintoshes, is not installed by default. In order to install Rosetta-OIT highly recommends it-click on the Customize button which near the bottom left-hand corner of the Install Mac OS X as shown below.

Clicking on the Customize button will reveal the window shown below; check the checkbox to the left of Rosetta to tell the installer to install Rosetta.

The Macintosh community is developing a list of applications which are compatible with Mac OS 10.6. While not an exhaustive list and certainly not a final list this list does provide some guidance as to whether some applications are compatible with Mac OS 10.6. Most applications should work without any problems, whereas some applications may need to be updated. For example Adobe has announced they will provide no support for Adobe CS3 applications running under Mac OS 10.6; users will have to upgrade to Adobe CS4 in order to get support. The list may be viewed at wiki link.
