Mailing list (listserv) application

What is a mailing list?

A listserver is a system designed to simply the process of sending the same message to a group of people via e-mail. The e-mail is sent to the mailing list address, and the listserver distributes the message to everyone who is subscribed to the mailing list. Listserv mailing lists (also referred to as listservs) are very adaptable. For example, lists can be configured to facilitate discussion among list members, or to act as a one-way communication pipeline to subscribers. List owners can add and remove subscribers, or allow users to subscribe and un-subscribe themselves. You can get a complete description of listserver features and functions from the group that wrote the software at the CREN web site.

Your OSU Internet Username (smith.9999@osu.edu):

1. PROPOSED MAILING LIST NAME:
The name must be between 4 and 15 alphanumeric characters (do not include any spaces, or symbols other than "-"). You may want to use a portion of your name or a few characters that identify your department or organization or; for example, "VWOOLF" or "PUBPOLMGMT".
List your first and second choices below:

FIRST CHOICE:

SECOND CHOICE:

2. DESCRIPTION OF LIST:
Provide a short description of the list (69 characters maximum); for example, "Virginia Woolf List" or "OSU School of Public Policy and Management List".

DESCRIPTION:

3. LIST PASSWORD:
Provide a password consisting of a combination of between six and eight letters and numbers (do not use symbols or spaces). The password will be used by the listowner(s) for list administration requests. PASSWORD:

--SECTION II (list options; make your selection from the menus below)

4. SUBSCRIBERS:
Do you want to allow anyone to subscribe to the list or only those approved by the list owner(s)?

5. INBOUND MESSAGES:
Do you want to allow anyone to send messages to the list or should this be limited to subscribers only?

Note: If your mailing list is open to anyone, no address verification is required. In order to reduce the amount of unwanted mail sent to your list, OIT recommends limiting the list to send by subscribers only. However, if your list is limited to subscribers only, messages sent to the list must be from an address that belongs to a current subscriber. If the list owner subscribes individuals (as opposed to individuals subscribing themselves), it is important that the e-mail address entered is correct. An easy way to determine the address to use is by checking the "From" header field in a mail message from the subscriber.

6. OUTBOUND MESSAGES:
Do you want to allow any message to be posted to the list or would you rather review and then approve messages for posting?

7. REPLIES TO MESSAGES:
Do you want the list configured so that replies to messages are sent to the entire list or only to the original sender?

--SECTION III (list sponsor and list owners)

Please provide the following information for the list sponsor (question #8) and each list owner (question #9):

8. LIST SPONSOR:
Who is the faculty or staff sponsor for this list? (Note: List owners will be notified if at any time a OIT mailing list is without a sponsor.)

Unique name at OSU (e.g., name.n)
Full name
Phone number
E-mail address
9. LIST OWNER(S):
Who will be the owner(s) of this list? Provide the information described above for each owner (up to five).

Owner 1:
Unique name at OSU (e.g., name.n)
E-mail address

Owner 2:
Unique name at OSU (e.g., name.n)
E-mail address

Owner 3:

E-mail address

Owner 4:
Unique name at OSU (e.g., name.n)
E-mail address

Owner 5:

Unique name at OSU (e.g., name.n)

Warning: You must provide a single e-mail address for each individual so that Listprocessor can respond to maintenance requests. To determine the address to use, have the sponsor (if this person also will be an owner) and each owner do a simple test: 1) start the e-mail program which will be used for sending messages to Listprocessor regarding list maintenance; 2) send himself/herself a test message; 3) when the messages arrives, check the "From" line in the message header for the correct address to use.

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this application for a OIT mailing list.
