    * - The vast majority of university faculty, staff, and student accounts have been migrated, as have non-personal business accounts (departmental, organizational, and cluster accounts). At this time, the only accounts remaining to migrate are a very small number faculty, staff and student accounts that are well over quota.

For instructions on checking your own account's migration status, see Central E-mail Migration: Check Your Account Status.

Overview:
Over the past few months OIT has been working to develop and implement a new e-mail system. The new e-mail system will provide additional reliability, functionality, and flexibility. We have migrated most OSU staff and faculty, and are currently migrating students. To date OIT has migrated approximately 99.98% of the addresses on the old e-mail server to the new e-mail server. Additionally, we have migrated approximately 99.97% of the accounts with mailboxes on the old e-mail server to the new e-mail server. When all migrations are complete, OIT will have migrated more than 145,000 accounts, of which approximately 75,000 have associated inboxes. (Addresses without inboxes reflect accounts which forward to other email addresses.)

What does this mean to me?
The migration plan is designed to have minimal impact on users. No significant system downtime is expected during the planned 4-6 week migration period.

During the migration period, the login page for OSU Webmail will be preceded by a "Migration Assistant", where you will enter your OSU Internet Username (typically lastname.#) and be routed to the correct Webmail server, old or new, depending on your current migration status.

If your account has not yet been migrated, you will be redirected to the old Webmail server login at webmail.osu.edu:444 . This was done to address the security warning/certificate mismatch error that occurred when redirecting to old-webmail.osu.edu. Unfortunately, this can cause an issue with some areas, where firewalls block traffic on non-standard ports. See Old Webmail (Port 444) Access for more information.

While your account is actively in the process of being migrated, you will be unable to access your e-mail through POP, IMAP, or OSU Webmail. E-mail sent during that time will be queued and delivered when your account is once again available. You can check if your account is in the process of being migrated by following these instructions. The process should take no longer than 20 minutes.

After your account has been migrated, POP and IMAP users will not need to change any settings in their e-mail program, or see any difference. OSU Webmail users will see a new and improved look and feel for the site.

Recently, a number of e-mails began circulating from a source claiming to be from the Ohio State webmail team or admin managers. The e-mails ask people to submit their osu.edu e-mail account information and password, sometimes along with personal information like a birth date. Some other qualities of these attacks may include a non-OSU reply-to address, poor grammar and incomplete or improper OSU branding.

These messages are not from OIT, are not related to the migration, and OIT will never ask you for your password. These e-mails are phishing attempts and not legitimate requests. You should never reply to these e-mails and never give your password to anyone.

OIT expects these attacks to continue because senders expect financial gain by accessing your account to send mass mail or having your personal information. If you ever have a question about the legitimacy of an e-mail, please call 688-HELP(8-HELP) for verification.

For more information on phishing, check out the Buckeye Secure phishing page .
